Why the neck matters after concussion

A head knock rarely affects the brain alone. The neck absorbs force too, and cervical joint dysfunction, muscle tension, and reduced mobility can drive headache, fog, and dizziness that get blamed purely on the brain.

Neck rehabilitation after concussion is not generic massage. We examine how your neck moves, what reproduces your symptoms, and whether whiplash-style injury happened alongside the head injury. That clarity matters before you spend months resting symptoms that have a treatable neck component.

We are a Complete Concussions certified clinic. Cervical care sits inside a wider concussion plan, not as an isolated add-on. If you have not been assessed recently, we usually begin with concussion assessment.

What neck rehabilitation involves

Your visit starts with history: mechanism of injury, headache pattern, dizziness triggers, and prior treatment. We examine neck range of motion, joint mobility, muscle tone, and how head movement affects symptoms.

Treatment is staged. Manual therapy where appropriate, mobility drills, postural and deep-neck-flexor strengthening, and home exercises you can tolerate without flare. We progress load based on your response each session.

Neck rehab often pairs with vestibular rehabilitation, exercise rehabilitation, or Post-Concussion Syndrome management when symptoms have persisted. After a car accident, see also our whiplash treatment pathway.

How to book and what to bring

Book online or call 0401 498 498. No GP referral is required. Tell us if the injury was recent or symptoms have lingered.

  • Date and mechanism of injury (sport, fall, motor vehicle accident)
  • Neck pain location and what makes headache or dizziness worse
  • Prior imaging or specialist letters if you have them
  • Work, sport, or study demands you need to return to

Wear comfortable clothing so we can examine your neck and upper back properly.

Fees and transparency

Concussion initial appointments are $139 (in person or telehealth); follow-ups $115. General physiotherapy initial consultations are $115 for 45 minutes where that rate applies. We explain recommended session frequency before you proceed. Private health rebates apply on the spot for in-clinic visits.

When to seek other care first

Go to hospital for red flags after head or neck trauma: worsening weakness, numbness, severe worsening headache, repeated vomiting, or loss of consciousness with concerning recovery. Healthdirect outlines when neck pain needs urgent review.

Fracture, cord injury, or unstable pathology needs medical clearance before hands-on cervical treatment. We refer onward when imaging or specialist review is required.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can neck problems cause concussion symptoms?

Yes. Cervical dysfunction can contribute to headache, dizziness, and visual strain after a head injury. Treating the neck is often part of resolving persistent symptoms.

Do I need a scan before neck rehabilitation?

Most patients do not. We screen for red flags clinically. If your history suggests fracture or serious pathology, we refer for imaging before hands-on treatment.

Is neck treatment safe soon after concussion?

Gentle, targeted cervical care can be appropriate early when clinically indicated. We match technique and load to your stage of recovery.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies. Some people improve within a few visits; others with overlapping PCS need longer coordinated care. We review progress each appointment.
