A knock to the head needs more than rest and hope. We assess symptoms, neck and balance systems, and your goals, then map a clear recovery plan from day one.

Why a specialist assessment matters

Concussion is a brain injury, even when scans are normal. General advice online cannot tell you whether your dizziness is vestibular, your neck is contributing, or you are safe to return to training. A dedicated concussion assessment answers those questions early.

We are certified by Complete Concussions. That means structured testing, documented baselines where needed, and return-to-learn and return-to-sport protocols that protect you from coming back too soon.

If symptoms have already lasted weeks, we still start with assessment, then link you to Post-Concussion Syndrome management when appropriate.

What happens at your first visit

Your first appointment is a full consultation, not a quick checklist. We take a detailed history of the injury and your symptoms, review sleep, stress, and prior concussions, then examine cervical spine, balance, vision, and coordination.

We explain findings in plain language, set activity limits for the first days, and outline the next steps. That may include exertion testing, vestibular rehab, or communication with your school, employer, or club.

Many patients also benefit from baseline comparison if we have prior data. Athletes often pair assessment with our return to sport pathway later in recovery.

How to book and what to bring

Book online or call 0401 498 498. Tell us if the injury was recent or if symptoms have persisted. We allocate enough time either way.

  • Approximate date and mechanism of injury
  • List of current symptoms and what makes them worse
  • Medications and relevant medical history
  • Sport, work, or study demands you need to return to
  • Any prior imaging reports (scans rarely diagnose concussion but can rule out other injury)

Fees and transparency

A concussion initial appointment is $139 (in person or telehealth). Follow-ups are $115. We explain recommended follow-up before you proceed. Private health rebates apply on the spot for in-clinic visits.

When to seek emergency care first

Heads Up is a specialist day clinic, not an emergency department. Go to hospital if you have red flags such as repeated vomiting, seizures, weakness, severe worsening headache, or increasing confusion. Healthdirect lists urgent warning signs.

Once you are medically stable, book assessment so recovery is structured, not guessed.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a GP referral for concussion assessment?

No referral is required for private physiotherapy. Your GP can still refer if you prefer, and we are happy to communicate with your doctor.

How soon should I be assessed after a head injury?

Ideally within the first week, sooner if symptoms are significant or you need clearance for work or sport. If red flags are present, attend emergency care first.

Will I need a CT or MRI scan?

Most concussions are diagnosed clinically. Imaging is for ruling out serious structural injury when red flags exist, not for confirming concussion itself.

Do you assess children and adults?

Yes. Plans are tailored to age, sport, school, and medical history.

Where is the clinic located?

8/531 Hay St, Subiaco WA 6008. Convenient for Perth metro patients.
